Large hand-hewn demilune granite trough, 18th century French.  This handsome stone container was most likely used to store apple or pear cider.  Note right rim notch to support the handle of a long ladle, and the carved interior circle for resting the ladle's bowl.  The half-round shape makes the trough ideal for placement against a wall or with background plantings--perhaps a row of espalliered fruit trees.
